Madonna wrote the reinvention blueprint

Here's a question I've been thinking about...

What has Madonna understood for the last 40 years that many real estate agents still haven’t figured out?

Reinvention.

Madonna has never stopped being Madonna. But she has repeatedly changed how Madonna shows up. New sound. New look. New audience. New way of getting our attention. She didn’t abandon who she was. She redesigned how she operated. And whether you love her, hate her, or think she should occasionally put some clothes on, you have to admit: the woman knows how to remain relevant.

Real estate is entering one of those moments.

Most agents believe they’re standing on solid ground. They don’t realize the ground has already started moving beneath them. For years, our businesses were built on concrete fundamentals: work hard, answer your phone, market your listings, take care of your clients. Those things still matter. They always will. But artificial intelligence isn’t simply adding another tool to our toolbox. It is quietly changing how consumers search, how businesses operate and how quickly work can be done. The agents at greatest risk may be the ones saying, “I’ve got this figured out." Because they’re solving tomorrow’s problems with yesterday’s business model. If your business never reinvents itself, it eventually becomes cringe-worthy yesteryear. Your clients will look at you like you’re the 90-year-old at the wedding trying to twerk. It might be fun to watch, but they probably aren’t going to pay you for it.

The future doesn’t belong to the agents who learn AI.

It belongs to the agents who redesign their business.

Now, before you get all up in my grill about AI taking over the world, drinking our water supply and polluting the earth—all valid concerns—let me ask you a few questions: Would you live in Phoenix without air conditioning? Would you trade your car for a horse and buggy? When you’re sick, would you prefer modern medicine or some lovely eye-of-newt tea? You don’t have to answer out loud. Damn, I heard you from here! My point is that technology moves forward whether we like it or not. We absolutely should debate the guardrails around it—just as we required seat belts and airbags in cars and demanded more efficient air conditioners. But we are not going backward. Deep down, you already know that. What you can you about it is up to you.

This past week, I spent several days in sunny San Diego sitting inside freezing hotel conference rooms at Inman Connect. Had I taken a shot every time someone said “AI,” I would have been wasted by 9:00 a.m. Last year, everyone was talking about what AI might someday do. This year, the conversation had changed: Here is the tool. Here is the problem it solves. Here is the business being built around it. I came home with pages of notes, dozens of ideas and—as usual—more work for myself than any reasonable person should voluntarily create.

Will AI replace us as Realtors? No. Will it fundamentally change how we do business?Absolutely. Ask any agent who has been around for more than 20 years how the internet changed our industry. AI is going to multiply that change by ten. But should we fear it? No. Every successful agent has already redesigned their business at least once. The internet forced a redesign. Zillow forced a redesign. Social media forced a redesign. Video forced a redesign. COVID forced a redesign. Now AI is forcing another one.

The agents who say, “I’ve always done it this way,” aren’t defending a proven system. They’re defending a system built for a world that no longer exists. You don’t need to become a programmer. You don’t need to spend your life talking to robots. And you certainly don’t need to surrender the human relationships that make this profession matter. You simply need to become willing to examine every part of your business and ask: Is there now a better way? That is why I believe our industry needs fewer classes about buttons, prompts and shiny new toys—and more Business Redesign Workshops. Not “How do I use AI?” But:

Where am I losing time?

Where am I inconsistent?

What am I still doing manually?

What does my client need from me now?

What could my business become if I were willing to rebuild it?

Because AI isn’t the destination. Reinvention is. You don’t have to become AI.

You have to become Madonna.

So the answer to the question I have been thinking about…If you had to rebuild your real estate business from scratch today—with everything you now know about AI—what would you build differently?
